Overview

Sore throat (pharyngitis) is pain, scratchiness, or irritation of the throat that often worsens when swallowing. It is one of the most common symptoms prompting medical visits. This data type enables tracking of throat symptoms for illness monitoring and clinical correlation.

Health Significance

  • Infection Indicator: Common symptom of viral and bacterial upper respiratory infections
  • Strep Detection: Pattern and severity help distinguish strep throat from viral causes
  • Illness Duration: Tracking helps monitor recovery timeline
  • Environmental Factors: May indicate allergies, dry air, or irritant exposure
  • Voice Health: Important for those whose work depends on voice

Clinical Context

Common Causes:

  • Viral infections (common cold, flu, mononucleosis, COVID-19)
  • Bacterial infections (strep throat - Group A Streptococcus)
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Allergies
  • Dry air
  • Mouth breathing during sleep
  • GERD (acid reflux)
  • Voice strain

Strep Throat Indicators (Centor Criteria):

  • Fever
  • Tonsillar exudates (white patches)
  • Swollen/tender anterior cervical lymph nodes
  • Absence of cough

When to Seek Medical Attention

Urgent Evaluation:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Inability to swallow saliva (drooling)
  • Severe throat swelling
  • Muffled or "hot potato" voice
  • High fever (>101.5°F/38.6°C)
  • Neck stiffness or swelling
  • Symptoms of dehydration

Schedule Appointment For:

  • Sore throat lasting more than a week
  • Sore throat with fever but no cold symptoms (possible strep)
  • Recurrent sore throats
  • Ear pain accompanying sore throat
  • Joint pain with sore throat
  • Rash with sore throat
  • Blood in saliva or phlegm
  • Lump in neck

Pattern Recognition

Tracking sore throat can reveal:

  • Illness duration and recovery trajectory
  • Seasonal patterns (viral season peaks)
  • Environmental triggers (allergies, dry air)
  • Recurrent infections pattern
  • Relationship to snoring or mouth breathing
  • GERD-related patterns (morning symptoms)
  • Voice strain patterns
  • Response to treatments

Caveats & Limitations

  • Cannot distinguish viral from bacterial cause
  • Subjective severity varies between individuals
  • Does not capture throat appearance (redness, exudates)
  • Cannot assess for strep without clinical evaluation
  • Does not record associated symptoms in same entry
  • Brief episodes may not be logged
  • Cannot differentiate pharyngitis from laryngitis
